Stunning Photo Manipulations by Michael Oswald

Stunning Photo Manipulations by Michael Oswald

Hiding in the last row of a boring class in high school shouldn’t always be regarded as slacking. What once started of as fooling around with Photoshop and 3D Max in the back of AutoCAD class, has now developed into signature style that 30-year-old digital artist Michael Oswald describes as ‘photo manipulation on steroids’.

These days, creation of Michael’s artwork starts by taking up to 100 reference pictures until he gets a perfect shot which is then processed in Photoshop and 3D Max. He uses just a few Photoshop tools like blurring, airbrushing and smudging to paint over the top of the image in order to make it look like a painting.

In spite of his work being a combination of unique Photoshop techniques and digital painting, Michael O doesn’t underestimate the importance of knowledge of the traditional art techniques. “The standard rules of art, like composition, always apply and the medium is just a personal choice,” says Michael.

Photorealistic Ballpoint Pen Drawings by 29-Year-Old Lawyer

Photorealistic Ballpoint Pen Drawings by 29-Year-Old Lawyer

I‘m no longer surprised to see lawyers do their seemingly effortless pen flips so as to demonstrate the opposing side how little the situation on the floor intimidates them. What does come as a surprise, though, is learning that same Bic pen can be used to create art masterpieces in the hands of a lawyer.

Samuel Silva, a 29-year-old Portugal-based attorney, describes his artwork merely as a hobby, and Bic ballpoint pens â€" as only one of the mediums in his creative work. It takes time to believe that his drawings are not actually photographs, and then to absorb the information that they were created using only 8 different-colored pens.

“I’m just a lawyer, art is just a hobby for me, although it takes from 5 to 50 hours to finish each drawing,″ says Samuel who started drawing when he was 2.

His work bears a resemblance to Juan Francisco Casas’ hyper-realistic Ballpoint Pen Drawings from neighboring Spain. Both artists use nothing but regular Bic pens, however Samuel uses up to 8 colors, whereas Juan settles for a blue color.

Below are five of Samuel’s best drawings. You can find more on his deviantART page.

Then and Now Blend of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

Then and Now Blend of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906, San Franciscans woke up to a quick shake. For the next 20-25 seconds, everything was silent. And then the great earthquake broke loose. Buildings fell, the city’s downtown crumbled and broken gas lines burst into flame. The city burned for three days and over 80% of San Francisco was destroyed.

Now, more than 100 years later, photographer Shawn Clover decided to combine the photos taken right after the 1906 earthquake with the modern-day San Fransisco.

He tried to find the exact spot the photographer stood, the equivalent focal length and the same high off the ground where the camera was. Unfortunately, he found that it was impossible to replicate many of the original photos because they were taken in places where new buildings stand today.

Nevertheless, Shawn created a striking series of composite photographs, entitled “1906 + 2010: The Earthquake Blend”. Here are some of our favorite photos.

15 More Cool and Creative T-Shirts

15 More Cool and Creative T-Shirts

Seeing how much you liked 10 Creative and Unusual T-Shirts that we posted two years ago, we decided to make one more list of cool tees.

What’s interesting is that “t-shirt” didn’t even exist in English dictionary until the 1920′s, and only in 1960′s it became stylish and entered the mainstream fashion.

It’s hard to believe, but up until the 1950’s, t-shirts were still considered underwear until Marlon Brando, John Wayne, and James Dean shocked Americans by wearing their “underwear” on television.[1]

This, of course, convinced the public that it was absolutely OK to were T-Shirts, and now, after more than 50 years, there are thousands of creative T-shirt designs out there. Some of the best ones are on this list.

Incredible Hand Painting Illusions by Annie Ralli

Incredible Hand Painting Illusions by Annie Ralli

Do you remember the amazing Hand Painting Art by Guido Daniele we posted two years ago? Well, don’t be deceived, this is not another collection of his work.

The hand paintings below are all painted by a talented London-based body painter Annie Ralli. Photographed by Ray Massey, these hand illusions are a part of advertising campaign for Ecclesiastical Insurance, a niche insurance company using the byline “You’re in good hands”.

“Bodypainting is a skill I perfected working with stills photographers,” says Annie, who is also a former BBC scenic artist.

“It is meticulous work, but it has to be carried out at speed, partly because the “cavas” walkas away at the end of the day and partly because paint is less stable on a living, moving base. The work is fun and the results can be beautiful.”
